BISHOP PINE (small) Pinus muricata |
A rapid-grower from the coast of California (all the way down into Baja), Bishop Pine features an open pyramidal form when young, a dense, rounded canopy in middle life, and an irregular, windswept appearance in age. Rarely cultivated outside California, Bishop Pine makes a first-rate windbreak tree with a tremendous tolerance for seaside conditions. The Bishop Pine's conspicuous, prickly cones (2 to 3 inch-long ovals, always persistent, appearing in groups of 3 to 5) have led some to call the tree "Pricklecone Pine". This limby tree can grow to 130 feet tall, but is usually smaller. |
